2006-01-16 - 4:36 p.m. Happy Dr. King Day. This morning, I took Dolly out to play fetch around a couple of athletic fields. She had a great time, except for stepping in burrs again. We have some kind of weed here that produces the most ferocious burrs – about a quarter inch in diameter and very sharp. She gets them in between the pads on her paws. The burrs are so bad that I hurt my fingers taking them out from between her toes. You know that’s gotta hurt, but the most she does is limp. I watch her closely and when I see her favoring a paw, I check her thoroughly. We spent most of Saturday unpacking boxes in the basement, so there were lots to put out for recycling. Happily, here on post, we have curbside recycling, so I don’t have to load up the car with the stuff and schlep it to the landfill. Yesterday, I got to go see the Hurricanes play in Raleigh. I haven't seen a hockey game in more than a year. David's company got a bunch of tickets, so he got two, but he already had plans for that afternoon. I went alone, as I couldn't find anyone to go with me. I knew that my friends Terry and Bob would be there, so I got to see them and say hello. (Hello!) The Canes started slowly, but seemed to remember what they were about by the third period. One of the players scored three goals, known as a hat trick, so everyone threw their (free at the door) John Deere hats onto the ice. Not me, I keep my hats. It was Military Appreciation Day, so they had the color guard from Pope present the colors, and a paratrooper from the 82d sang the national anthem, and they had several tapes of the players thanking the military for all they do. The whole thing was a lot of fun, and it's always nice to see them home team win. I even got to wear my Canes jersey, one of the two I bought at a huge discount last year, just before the strike ended. Heh. After the game, I went over to my friends’ house, where I got to meet and walk with their new (to me) dog, Lucky. He's a beauty, and very enthusiastic. He's not yet a year old, so he's still a pup. I did go and get my thyroid ultrasound last Wednesday. Now I need to make an appointment with the doctor for next week, if I can. Apparently, there's an endocrinologist from Walter Reed Hospital who comes to Ft Bragg once a month to see the thyroid patients. and I want a referral to see that guy. My mom had to have her thyroid removed a few years ago. I don't want to wait until it's a problem - I want to start dealing with it now.
