2006-12-07 - 10:47 p.m. I have mentioned my ongoing problem with my foot - plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a tendon which stretches from the toes to the heel. This loses its elasticity, and instead of stretching when weight's on it, it pulls at the point of attachment in the heel. Most people who have this pain call it heel spurs. The solution is to stretch the calf muscles, so that part of the system has some give and elasticity, to cope with the weight of walking. (The fascia bears a load of twice my weight when I'm walking.) I have tried a few things - inserts in my shoes, a cortisone shot, a Strasburg sock at night, stretching - and have not gotten much relief. I need to be much more disciplined about stretching that leg. It's especially bad in the morning, when my calf has had all night to tighten up. So this morning I got out of bed, turned around and braced myself against the side of the bed and stretched my calf for a minute or so. It made a great difference. Every time I sit at my desk, or behind the wheel, that calf muscle is tightening up. I just have to accept the reality and stretch that leg everytime I get up, before I start walking around and re-injuring the fascia. I got a good bit done at work today, getting my files closed out, that is, collecting all the papers that we need, in the proper order, and with a final spreadsheet showing the profit or loss. I closed a few today, but there's more where that came from. Plenty of work to keep me busy. Busy is good, it keeps my mind off my self-centered fears. Work's little enough fun as it is - no need to make it worse by projecting future unhappiness. Happy Anniversary to Sandy B, wherever you are! I believe it's his 41st year, too. That's a long time to stay sober.
