Another long day at work, followed by an hour on my feet in the kitchen, making a fancy cake for the cake contest on Friday. What on earth possessed me to enter that, I can't tell you. I blame the hormones.

When I first moved to Fayetteville, I got a silicone bundt cake pan in a vaguely Gothic cathedral shape. Two years ago, I made a cranberry-orange pound cake in it, with good results. One odd thing, though - it took 50% longer to bake than the recipe recommended (1 hour). In fact, when I first took it out of the oven and turned it out onto a wire rack, it was still partially liquid. I dumped the whole mess back in the pan and put it back in the oven for another 30 minutes. (Hey, you work on a dang cake batter for an hour and see if you're willing to throw it away.) It came out just fine (eventually).

Well, this one just passed its 60 minute mark, and is still liquid enough to wobble when I pulled the rack out to test it, so back it goes. The batter is made in two parts - you get everything together except the egg whites, then whip the egg whites and fold them in. It's a process, let me tell you. I just hope I can stay awake until it's ready to come out of the oven.

Noel's much perkier today. Must have been a cold.
